Medicare Advantage

SHARE

Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Part C, is offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies as an alternative to Original Medicare (Part A and B).

Medicare Advantage plans must cover all the services provided by Original Medicare (Part A – hospital insurance and Part B – medical insurance). However, they can also include extra benefits beyond what Original Medicare offers, such as prescription drug coverage, vision, dental, and hearing benefits.

Different Plan Types

Medicare Advantage plans come in various types:

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans

HMO Plans

HMOs are cheaper than other Medicare Advantage plans. They require plan members to use their in-network providers and choose a primary care doctor.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans

PPO Plans

PPOs offer more flexibility. You can use out-of-network providers but at a higher cost. Plan members don’t have to choose a primary care doctor or get referrals to see specialists.

Special Needs Plan (SNP)

SNP

SNPs are for those who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid (D-SNP), have chronic and disabling conditions (C-SNP), or are living in an institution (I-SNP).

Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS) Plans

PFFS Plans

PFFS plans negotiate what you will pay and what they will pay for every visit, giving you the benefit of knowing what your costs will be beforehand. You can see any doctor who accepts the terms and conditions of your PFFS plan.

Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA)

MSA

MSA plans use a savings account and high deductible plan to pay for medical costs.

Cost-Effectiveness

Medicare Advantage plans typically bundle coverage together, often at a lower cost than what you would pay for Original Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), and prescription drug coverage separately. However, costs can vary based on the specific plan, insurance company, and location.

Enrollment and Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be enrolled in Original Medicare and live in the plan’s service area. You can enroll during specific enrollment periods, such as the Initial Enrollment Period when you first become eligible for Medicare or the Annual Enrollment Period that occurs each year.
