What to expect during your free Medicare consultation with a Delta Medicare Benefits Group advisor depends on which of the below categories you fall into:

  1. First-time enrollees turning 65 – During your consultation, we explain how Medicare works, answering all of your initial questions and ensuring that you understand your healthcare benefits. Then we’ll enroll you in Parts A and B. It can be a complicated process, and we don’t want our clients to go through that, so we do the heavy lifting for you. After you’re enrolled, we’ll conduct a needs analysis. We’ll look at your medications, doctors, and budget to make a determination with you on what supplementation plan is best for your specific needs. As good as Medicare is, everyone needs a supplement. We help you determine what that supplement is, whether it’s a Medicare supplement plan or a Medicare Advantage plan.
  2. For people who have remained on their employer coverage – This consultation process is similar to the first-time callers. We’re going to explain how Medicare works, enroll you in your Part B coverage, and then conduct a needs assessment to determine the supplement that works best for your specific situation and budget.
  3. For existing Medicare beneficiaries who are unhappy with their plan or premiums – We will conduct the same needs analysis that we do with the other two types of clients to determine if you are getting the best plan on the market based on what you need. We have no allegiance with any insurance company; our true allegiance is with our clients, so our goal is to help you maximize your benefits to the fullest extent.

In most cases, Medicare Part D will cover your prescription drug costs. However, there are situations where Medicare Part A or B will cover your drug costs. If you’re not sure, give us a call.

If you have Medicare as well as another insurance provider, each type of coverage is called a “payer,” and they can work together, depending on your needs. Coordination of benefits rules will decide which payer pays first. Once the primary payer has paid, the rest of the bill will go to the secondary payer. Depending on the size of your group, the specifics will vary.

Medicare Advantage is also known as Medicare Part C. Learn more about Medicare Advantage or Part C here. Whether you should get Part C depends on your specific situation. If you missed your initial enrollment period (IEP), you will likely have to enroll during the Special Enrollment Period (SEP) or the General Enrollment Period (GEP). GEP starts January 1 and ends March 31. If you sign up during GEP, your coverage will kick in on July 1.

Missing initial enrollment may result in penalties.

Medicare annual enrollment starts October 15 and ends on December 7 every year. During this period, you can change your Medicare Advantage plan or supplemental coverage.

Depending on the type of Medigap coverage you need, Medicare supplement plan costs will vary. The supplement cost will range, depending on the plan you choose, your age, and the region in which you live. In 2022, the standard Part B premium is $170.10. If you receive benefits from Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board, or Office of Personnel Management, your Part B premium will be deducted from your benefits. If you do not receive these benefits, your premium costs will be sent to you in a bill. While most people will pay the monthly premium for Part B, you may have a higher premium based on your income. If you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for a specific period of time while working, you won’t pay for Medicare Part A. This is sometimes referred to as “Premium-Free Part A,” and most people do get this.

If you are not eligible for Premium-Free Part A, you can purchase it. Depending on how long you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes, you will pay $274 or $499 per month for year 2022. If you decide not to enroll in Part A, you can still enroll in Part B. Medicare Part A is known as “hospital insurance.” In general, Part A covers the following:

  • Hospital stays

  • Skilled nursing facilities

  • Nursing home care* (in-patient care in a skilled nursing facility that is not categorized as custodial or long-term care)

  • Hospice

  • Home health care

Original Medicare (Part A and B) does not cover the cost of assisted living or most types of long-term care, including Alzheimer’s or dementia care. However, some Medicare Advantage plans may help cover assisted living costs. Additionally, Medicare Advantage may offer other long-term care options under certain circumstances. Talk to a professional to discuss your long-term care options.

There is a 7-month period, called the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), when you can enroll in Medicare. This begins 3 months before the month of your 65th birthday, includes your birth month, and continues for 3 months following the month of your 65th birthday. Coverage will begin on the first day of the month you turn 65 years old. If you were born on the first day of the month, your coverage will begin on the first day of the month before your birth month.

There may be some special circumstances, including disability which allows 24 months for sign up. Your Medicare representative can help with these explanations.

While some people will automatically begin receiving benefits from Medicare Part A and B via Social Security, others will need to sign up for Medicare manually. If you are 65, or will be in three months, and not receiving Social Security, you will need to sign up for Part A and B benefits.

Additional Medicare benefits outside of Part A and B will need to be signed up for manually, as well. You can do this by contacting Delta Benefits Group at (901) 460-7220. Here are some facts to be aware of concerning Medicare enrollment:

  • Some people will receive Medicare Part A and B automatically, but some people will not. You may need to actually sign up to begin your enrollment.

  • There are specific periods within the year when you can sign up or change your Medicare Advantage benefits (annual enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7).

  • Sign up for Medicare Part B when you first become eligible to avoid any penalties

  • You can design your own Medicare coverage based on what works best for you, your health, and your budget; a medicare consultant near you can help you do this for free.

  • You may be eligible to get support with Medicare costs. Call Delta Benefits Group to see if you qualify.

Medicare Part D plans have a gap in coverage referred to as the “donut hole.” Not everyone will enter the donut hole, but, if your total drug costs reach a certain limit, you may. The limit includes what you and Medicare pay for your total drug cost. In 2021, that limit is set at $4,130. When you reach this mark, thereafter, you will be responsible for paying a percentage of your drug costs.

Medicare Part B, also known as “medical insurance,” covers three types of services:

 

  • Medically Necessary Out-Patient Services – A service will be determined as “medically necessary” if it is needed to effectively diagnose and treat a health condition. Some medically necessary services include doctor office visits

  • Durable Medical Equipment – This includes wheelchairs, crutches, home hospital beds, diabetic supplies, etc.

  • Preventive Services – Services that help prevent illnesses, like the flu, or detect illnesses at earlier stages, when treatment is most likely to be more effective.

Medicare Part C is also known as “Medicare Advantage” and is offered by private, Medicare-approved insurance companies. A Medicare Advantage plan offers you the benefits covered by Part A and Part B, plus more, depending on your insurance needs. You may also have extra coverage outside of Parts A and B, including vision, hearing, dental, etc.

In most cases, Medicare Advantage plans have a zero premium. While Medicare-approved insurance companies must adhere to rules established by Medicare, certain out-of-pocket costs and rules may fluctuate depending on the insurance company you choose. Medicare Part D covers most outpatient prescription drugs. Private companies, approved by Medicare, offer Part D as a standalone plan, for members signed up for original Medicare, or as benefits included in your Medicare Advantage plan.
