Dental Insurance for Seniors

SHARE

Did you know dental insurance can be costly to your healthcare expenses? It’s even more challenging for those on Original Medicare, as dental care coverage is often lacking.

Don’t fret, though! We’re here to provide valuable information on accessing network dentists, preventive dental services, and additional dental care options through Medicare and supplemental dental insurance coverage. Let’s dive into what you need to know as you search for comprehensive coverage.

Choosing the Right Dental Insurance Plan

Many seniors turn to Medicare Advantage plans that include dental coverage when safeguarding their oral health. As you evaluate these plans, ensure they cover the dental care that matters most to you. Some common dental care services covered by Medicare Advantage plans are:

  • X-rays
  • Routine dental examinations
  • Gum disease treatments
  • Fillings
  • Dentures

While Medicare Advantage plans often offer the best dental coverage for seniors, it’s worth exploring supplemental plans available through private insurance companies. Your choice will depend on the plans accessible in your area, their coverage, and the premiums you must pay.

Understanding Dental Services Covered by Medicare

The dental services covered by Medicare depend on the type of Medicare policy you have. Original Medicare typically doesn’t cover dental care, and you’re responsible for 100% of the costs for non-covered services, including dental care.

However, there’s an exception with Medicare Part A, or Hospital Insurance. This coverage includes dental care and services provided while you’re hospitalized. For example, if you require dental work during surgery for a broken jaw, Medicare Part A would generally cover it. Routine dental care, however, isn’t included.

Medicare Part B covers medically necessary dental work performed during other services. For instance, if you visit the hospital for a broken jaw and a physician performs dental work instead of a surgeon, Medicare Part B may step in to cover the cost. Routine dental procedures, though, are not covered.

Exploring Dental Coverage with Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage, offers additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare provides. These benefits often include hearing, vision, and preventive dental coverage.

While not all Medicare Advantage plans extend dental coverage beyond what Original Medicare offers, the majority do. In 2021, 94% of all Medicare Advantage enrollees had access to dental coverage. While around 14% had coverage limited to preventive services, most (86%) enjoyed more comprehensive coverage.

Medicare Advantage plans may offer various types of dental coverage, including:

  • Network coverage for preventative services like X-rays and dental cleanings
  • Reimbursement allowances to cover upfront payments made at the time of service
  • Supplemental benefits allow you to purchase additional dental coverage by paying an additional premium on top of the base coverage costs

Understanding the Costs of Medicare Dental Insurance Plans

Medicare dental insurance plans for seniors set a yearly limit on out-of-pocket costs for both Part A and Part B services. The cost of Medicare Advantage plans can vary based on your circumstances. As of 2022, premiums for Medicare Advantage plans range between $0 and $189 per month in Shelby County, TN. In DeSoto County, MS, the monthly premiums decrease to between $0 and $109.
