Initial Enrollment Period
If you receive Social Security benefits, you're automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.
If you're not automatically enrolled, you must sign up through the Social Security Administration.
You must enroll during specific periods to avoid penalties:
- Initial Enrollment – Starts 3 months before and ends 3 months after your 65th birthday.
- Annual Enrollment (AEP) – October 15 to December 7 for making changes.
- General Enrollment (GEP) – January 1 to March 31 for late enrollees.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment – January 1 to March 31 for plan changes.
- Special Enrollment – Available for qualifying life events.
A 6-month window after Part B starts to buy supplemental coverage without denial.
